Amazing Grace,
a Walden Media Film, Released in UK on February 23rd 2007
Can one voice make a difference? 'Amazing Grace' is a new film out in March that follows the true story of William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd - Hornblower) and the abolition of the slave trade. As a child Wilberforce attended the church where John Newton (Albert Finney) was the preacher; the film shows how later in life the song 'Amazing Grace' becomes an inspiration and anthem for Wilberforce as he fronts the fight in the British Parliament to abolish the slave trade.
The role of the others - including the freed black slave Olaudah Equiano - who helped and supported Wilberforce in gathering evidence against the trade is not neglected but 'Amazing Grace' is designed to challenge and move us as we see the difference that one man can make when his faith motivates him to take a stand against injustice and speak for those with no voice. Britain had turned a blind eye to the horrors of the slave trade. However Wilberforce, himself a man who once was lost but became found, helps a nation that was blind to see.
