Dr. Nelu Balaj

Dr Nelu Balaj is the Scottish Churches Racial Justice Officer.

Nelu came to the UK from Romania in 1992, soon after the communist regime collapsed, to study theology. Before coming to the UK Nelu was very active within the Romanian Baptist Church. In 2004 Nelu obtained a Doctor of Theology degree in Missiology from the University of Birmingham.

Between 1999 and 2001 Nelu worked in Malawi with the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, Livingstonia Synod, as the Human Resources and Public Relations Officer for Ekwendeni Lay Training Centre. After returning to the UK he worked for short periods as Parish Assistant for Murrayfield Parish Church in Edinburgh and then as the Faithshare Assistant Secretary for The Church of Scotland World Mission Council. Nelu is currently a candidate in training for ministry in the Church of Scotland.  

Nelu's remit is to work with the Scottish Churches to raise awareness of racism and racial discriminating and to help the churches work with minority ethnic Christians and black and minority ethnic churches.
